Currently they have no shareholders. For 82 years, they have served as your outdoor co-op. A group of 23 climbing buddies who were drawn together by their love of the outdoors and their need to find high-quality, reasonably priced gear for their expeditions created REI in 1938.
The REI community now comprises 181 sites throughout 39 states and the District of Columbia, approximately 16,000 workers, and 23 million lifetime members.
As you already know, REI is the perfect place where you can find products from all kinds of brands. REI offers three shipping options with estimated delivery times: standard shipping takes 5–7 business days, faster shipping takes 2–3 business days, and the fastest shipping option delivers within 1–2 business days.
Estimated arrival dates do not apply to deliveries in Alaska, Hawaii, PO boxes, rural areas, U.S. territories, APO/FPO addresses, or international locations.
Additionally, items requiring ground shipping (such as hazardous, flammable, or oversized items), products shipped via common carrier freight (including boats and car-top boxes), bikes, out-of-stock items, and orders placed for REI Store Pickup are excluded from these delivery estimates.
Certain items may require a signature upon delivery. For any shipping-related questions, customers can contact REI directly at 1-800-426-4840.
Packages are not shipped from REI’s distribution center on the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Independence Day (4th of July), Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Labor Day, Presidents’ Day, Thanksgiving, the day after Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, and Christmas.
For gift cards, REI offers two shipping options: standard shipping, which takes 5–7 business days, and faster shipping, which takes 2–3 business days. REI e-gift cards are emailed directly to recipients, typically within a few hours of purchase or on a scheduled delivery date. Physical gift cards are no longer shipped internationally, including to Canada; however, REI e-gift cards can be sent to international recipients as a convenient alternative.
In-store pickup dates vary based on product availability. Specific dates are viewable on the product page when you choose “Pick up at store” and/or in the cart when you select and add the item to your cart.
The recipient is responsible for the payment of applicable duties, taxes, and other fees, that they may incur at customs.
Gift orders may be assessed duty depending on the country.

Oversize and heavy items may require additional charges. If additional shipping charges apply, you will be contacted for verification and approval before your order is shipped.
Deliveries for international orders, are estimated to arrive between 1 – 4 weeks, the delivery time can vary depending on how high the influx of orders are, as well as other common shipping impacts.
They stand behind everything they sell. If you are not satisfied with your purchase, you can return it for a replacement or refund—with a few exceptions—within one 1 year if you are an REI Co-op Member or within 90 days of your purchase if you are not a member.
For in-store returns, bring your item with its original product packaging and tags (if available), as well as proof of purchase, to the customer service desk at any of their REI locations for a free and easy return or exchange.
For mail returns, whether you need to return items purchased online or in a retail store, you can begin the mail-in return process online. See exceptions for mail-in returns.
